middle-east-war-us-israel-iran-escalation-2026

The Middle East is facing one of its most serious military crises in years after coordinated strikes by the United States and Israel against Iranian targets triggered a major conflict across the region. The attacks began on 28 February 2026, targeting Iranian military infrastructure, command centers, and nuclear-related facilities in cities such as Tehran and Isfahan.

Iran quickly retaliated by launching ballistic missiles and drone attacks against Israeli territory and several U.S. military bases across the Middle East, including locations in the Gulf region. The conflict has since expanded with fighting involving regional allies and militant groups, raising fears that the war could spread beyond the region.

Heavy bombardments have been reported in Iranian cities, while Israel has also faced rocket and drone attacks. Civilian casualties are rising as the fighting intensifies. Human rights monitors say more than 1,000 civilians have been killed and thousands injured during the early stages of the conflict.

The war has also triggered global economic concerns, with oil prices rising and shipping routes in the Persian Gulf under threat. Analysts warn that any disruption to the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy route, could impact fuel prices and international trade worldwide.

Military leaders in Washington and Tel Aviv have indicated that operations may continue, while Iran has vowed strong retaliation. With multiple countries involved indirectly, international observers fear the conflict could evolve into a broader international war if diplomacy fails.
